FAQish StuffIf this is a non-site, why does it have any content, even if minimal? Because the webmaster of autistics.org and I are both getting (metaphorically) sick to death of certain questions, but I have little use for a personal site, other than to answer questions we're sick to death of. Who are you? An autistic person who used to have a website. Where did your site go? I used to have a personal website. At this point, I don't, and am not likely to in the future. Most of my relevant writing, some of it woefully outdated, is in the Autism Information Library. I help maintain the autistics.org links page as well. A personal website would be redundant and pointless, considering that nearly all of my writing and favorite links are already published elsewhere on autistics.org. However, I appear to have decided I wanted to stick some links here anyway, and a bit of writing that didn't fit elsewhere on autistics.org. Go figure. It's still not the sort of site it used to be. May I republish your writing from autistics.org or elsewhere? No. If you have a specific piece of writing in mind, and a specific use for it, you can always try emailing the autistics.org webmaster. If your name is Daniel Drucker, you'll get a flat refusal, so don't bother. Do not publish anything of mine without explicit and current permission from me or the webmaster here. See U.S. Copyright Office for further information on copyright. I have, or think I have, some writing of yours that you never formally published. May I republish that? No. See U.S. Copyright Office for further information on copyright. Photographs? No. See U.S. Copyright Office for further information on copyright. Who's this Daniel Drucker guy? I have no affiliation with Daniel Drucker, Random Drucker, Daniel Max P. Drucker, dmd, Placain, Karui, Xyzzy Markany Tesseract Plugh, N2SXX, or any of his other names/callsigns. I do not wish to be contacted by him, directly or indirectly, in any way, shape, or form. Will you do my homework for me? No. Part of the reason I'm not in college is I can't do my own homework, let alone yours. Autism is in the DSM, but you put all these links criticizing psychiatry on your page. Isn't this contradictory? Narcolepsy's in the DSM too, and homosexuality used to be. The word "autism" conveys something meaningful that goes well beyond anything psychiatry could possibly have to say about it. Just because psychiatry has tried to monopolize its usage doesn't mean it's useless or confined to bleak medicalized definitions. Besides, I don't agree with every single thing said in every single page I link to. That would be impossible. [I think I may be unintentionally echolating someone in the end of one of those sentences, but I don't remember who. I'll give proper credit if I find out.] But why label yourself? Jane Meyerding explains some of it, at least, better than I could. My reasons for using the term differ slightly from hers, but her explanation is a good starting place. Are you a scientologist? No. Are you a libertarian? No. Why does my autistic [child/sibling/relative/student/friend/client/slave] [flap/rock/stim/self-injure/hit people/like shiny things/avoid eye contact]? I'm an autistic person, not a universal translator. How can any single autistic person know the exact reason every other autistic person does anything? What will my autistic child be like when [he/she/xe] grows up? I'm an autistic person, not a fortune-teller. Autistic people's development is notoriously unpredictable. What do you think of [ABA/FC/Floor Time/Holding Therapy/Psychoanalysis]? I'm an autistic person, not a therapy evaluation machine. But you might notice that I've written about various "therapies" and educational techniques. You [give me hope for my child's future/give people false hope and should shut up]. I'm an autistic person, not hope or false hope personified. Why anyone other than me would want to be like me is as much a mystery as why I would want to be someone else. You attack parents. No, I denounce injustice, whether perpetrated by parents, relatives, autistic people, classmates, coworkers, random people on the street, or professionals of all kinds. You're high functioning. Shut up and let me torture my low functioning [child/sibling/relative/student/friend/client/slave]. I've been called low functioning too. I've come to the conclusion that those words say more about NTs than the autistic people they're applied to. But if you're still convinced that I'm some kind of super-capable Ph.D. "just a little bit eccentric and quirky" stereotype, I'd be happy to shatter your illusions by letting you follow me around for a day. You're not autistic. I'm sure the people who're paid by the state to provide assistance with all of my daily living tasks would be happy to know that. You might want to tell them, instead. They could use a good laugh. You're too sarcastic to be autistic. Autistic people can't be sarcastic! <sarcasm>Yeah, right. Sure we can't.</sarcasm> You're an inspiration. Read this. Then read this. Then read this, keeping in mind the sarcastic tone. Then try to tell me that again. How can I best [drug/institutionalize/cure/torture/brainwash/segregate/kill] my autistic [child/sibling/relative/student/friend/client/slave]? Get lost. |
